Sleep Apnea & Snoring
Signs & Symptoms
Causes & Risk Factors
There are different ways to treat sleep apnea depending on the severity of the obstruction. Treatment options include:
Surgery
There are various surgical procedures that may be recommended for severe cases of sleep apnea, however there is limited evidence for their effectiveness.
Breathing devices
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices are the most common treatment for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. This treatment is often rejected by the patient due to the size and discomfort.
Dental devices.
Dental devices, also called oral appliances, are custom-made mouthpieces. These appliances position the lower jaw forward which in turn opens the airway. Effective appliances are formed from custom dental impressions and need to be fitted and adjusted to ensure proper fit for maximum effectiveness.
